For Give and Gain Day 2016 hosted by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Angel Appeal partnered with Du to distribute gift packages at the Dubai Creek. Seafarers were gifted first aid kits, flip flops, a towel, hat, and toiletries. We were joined by RTA staff and enthusiastic security officers who kindly joined in and conducted crowd control.
In October, Braemar held a corporate golf tournament for the 4th year. The competition was very keen for the top prizes of closet to the pin, longest drive, and top foursome, the winner of the hole in one was elusive for all but one of their guests. Afterwards, they celebrated the day and heard more about the work that The Angel Appeal and the Mission to Seafarers does in the UAE. We really appreciate their continued support of our cause. Look forward to next year's tournament.
DP World celebrated Water Quality month for August by distributing large bottles of cold water and thank you notes to seafarers, stevedores and other workers in Port Rashid. They picked the best day because that day the temperatures reached 44 degrees before noon. The thank you cards and water was greatly appreciated by all as shown by the smiles on their faces!
As part of its support to the Zayed Humanitarian Work Day held on the occasion of the death anniversary of the late UAE President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan on the 19th of Ramadan annually, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised various community activities to mark the occasion.
Paying tribute to the rich memory of Sheikh Zayed, Dubai Chamber honoured over 60 of its support staff working behind the scenes at the Chamber and presented over 1,000 packs of food to dhow seafarers anchored at Dubai Creek as well as hosted a community stakeholder Suhoor to build relationships and interact with its key community and government partners at the VIP Majlis in Dubai World Trade Centre.
In a special ceremony held for the 7th consecutive year, H.E. Hamad Buamim, President and CEO, Dubai Chamber, presented financial gifts to the cleaners, technicians, gardeners and security and kitchen staff for their hard work and dedication in maintaining high levels of hygiene, comfort and safety at the Chamber premises. In his address during the presentation ceremony, H.E. Buamim stated that the honouring of the Chamber support staff is in line with its commitment towards all its workers irrespective of the type of work they do in furthering the non-profit organisation’s mission and strategic objective of supporting the business community while promoting Dubai as an international business hub.
He said: “The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan has instilled in us humanitarian and charitable values to help the needy, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan, which we do annually as part of our contribution to bring joy to the less privileged members of the community.”
The support staff, who were presented certificates of appreciation and financial gifts, lauded the Chamber’s efforts stating that this humanitarian gesture motivates them to work hard in serving the Chamber and its stakeholders in the best possible way.
In another activity, Dubai Chamber organised a corporate volunteering activity for its staff to pack and distribute 1,000 Ramadan food items including rice, lentils, oil, curry powder and dates to the dhow sailors at Dubai Creek while the Chamber also organised a community stakeholder Suhoor in the evening to get-together and to discuss how to better serve the community.
P&G (Proctor&Gamble) spent the morning of the 25th of June (Seafarers Day) wrapping t-shirts absolutely packed with hygiene items. Everything from shampoo to deodorant to razors to toothpaste and toothbrushes. P&G really appreciate seafarers on this day because all of their products are carried around the world via ships and seafarers are vital to their supply chain. The gifts were later distributed to seafarers in Jebel Ali. We have pictures of the wrapping because it was in P&G's office. Unfortunately, we are not able to show photos of the gifts being distributed in the port. Not only does P&G support seafarers on the 25th of June each year but throughout the year P&G supports The Angel Appeal when we are in desperate need of hygiene items for seafarers in distress. A BIG THANKS TO P&G for their constant and continued support.
DP World selected The Angel Appeal for their Global Volunteer Week. Their slogan is fantastic - Nobody can do everything but everyone can do something. That fits The Angel Appeal perfectly! It was a great team effort by DP World - the corporate office packed "Think Green" bags with lots of hygiene items from P&G and then the gifts were distributed by the team at DP World Hamriyah Port. What an amazing day! Thank you DP World for continuing to support the Angel Appeal not only as an annual sponsor but as a community project.
The annual Braemar golf day was held at Al Badia Golf Course this year and, again, it was a resounding success with 88 guests from the marine and insurance industry attending on a beautiful sunny day in Dubai. The tournament was a 4 ball scramble which seemed to set the tone for the day with stories of good shots, near misses and exceptionally, a hole in one. The eventually winners of the converted Braemar decanter were:
Mandeep Singh International Tanker Management
George Fitchet Hill International
Julian Krickl ART Marine Yachting.
Julien Horn Thomas Millar/TT Club
Longest Drive Julien Horn Thomas Millar/TT Club
Nearest the Pin Phil Bray Svitzer ME
Straightest drive Barry Gething Lloyd's Register
Braemar also ran a raffle in support of the Angel Appeal/Mission to Seafarers raising 12,455 AED (USD 3,400). Thanks to the help of local companies donating some amazing prizes. Dr Paul Burt, the resident Reverend for the Mission to Seafarers, was also the pride of the day in getting a hole in one on the course, for which Braemar presented a bottle of champagne to Paul to remember this rare achievement. Simon Cartwright, partner with Holman Fenwick Willan, was the lucky winner of the main raffle prize of a set of clubs.
A good day was had by all and we look forward to our day in 2015.
P&G had their employees wrap hundreds of t-shirts filled with hygiene items. Then we worked with DP World in Jebel Ali to distribute the gifts in the port. Before we could distribute, we received a safety briefing and safety equipment from DP World to ensure that we knew all of the procedures since we were going to distibute gifts within the container port. The port was so busy – ships were parked bow to stern. It was wonderful! The seafarers were so delighted to know that someone was thinking of them during their stop in the UAE. Plus, a couple of the ships even invited us on board for a tour of their ship. We visited ships from Croatia, Russia, Germany and Cyprus - to name a few. These seafarers will always remember Dubai.
Every year, Le Meridien AL Aqah hosts a Fun Day at the resort in Fujairah. The money raised at this event is given to various organizations that they support. Fortunately, The Angel Appeal is one of the organizations. BIG THANKS to General Manager Patrick Antaki and his team for the continuous support.
What a fantastic event WISTA had recently with the Angel Appeal. It was actually not just one event, it was a four in one! It started off with a trip to Fujairah where we were welcomed by representatives of the Port who provided us with VIP access to the Port. The Angel Appeal took us on board the Flying Angel. Then their work began... they wrapped presents for the seafarers and had great fun in distributing them later to the different crews. During the day they went alongside a few vessels and got an idea of the area and the work the Angel Appeal Crew does seven days a week!
They also heard of the needs of Seafarers and had the chance to have a personal chat with a few of them. In between, they managed to sit together and have an ad hoc WISTA meeting, discussing different issues which concern all of their members.
In the afternoon, they went back onshore to be welcomed by the Fujairah Port Authority who kindly invited us to join their National Day Celebration. Captain Moussa used the opportunity to introduce WISTA UAE to his staff. And finally after great food we had the chance to visit the new Control Tower and no other than Capt. Tamer himself showed us around and explained everything in detail. I think I can say that he was very happy with the knowledge the members demonstrated and he showed us the latest in technology at the Port of Fujairah's anchorage. Thanks to WISTA UAE for visiting the Flying Angel. We hope to see them again.
